Local History of Central Coast, Tasmania

Central Coast is a region located in the Australian state of Tasmania. The region is known for its beautiful landscapes, including beaches, forests and mountains, as well as rich history dating back to the Tasmanian Aboriginals.

Tasmanian Aboriginals

The Tasmanian Aboriginals were the original inhabitants of the Central Coast region. Their history can be traced back more than 35,000 years. They lived off the land, learning how to hunt and gather food from the local environment, including the sea, rivers and mountains.

The arrival of European settlers in the 19th century disrupted the way of life for the Tasmanian Aboriginals. They were forced off their land and suffered from diseases brought over from Europe, resulting in a significant population decline.

European Settlement

The first European to visit the region was the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642. It wasn't until the late 18th century that the British began to show interest in the area, using it as a base for hunting seals and whales.

In the early 19th century, the town of Ulverstone was established, which became a hub for the local farming community. The establishment of railways in the late 19th century made it easier for goods to be transported to and from the area, leading to further development.

Mining

In the late 19th century, a tin mine was established in the region, leading to an influx of miners looking for work. The mine was one of the largest in Tasmania and operated until the early 20th century.

Gold was also discovered in the region, leading to a gold rush in the late 19th century. Several small towns were established to support the mining communities, including Briseis and Balfour.

World War II

During World War II, the Central Coast region played an important role in Australia's defence. The town of Wynyard became a base for the Royal Australian Air Force, with several airstrips and training facilities established in the area.

The region was also home to several prisoner of war camps, where Italian and German prisoners were held. Many of these prisoners were put to work on local farms to help with the labour shortage caused by the war.

Pulp Mill Controversy

In the 21st century, the proposed establishment of a pulp mill in the region caused controversy and sparked passionate debate within the community. The proposal was met with opposition from environmental groups concerned about the potential impact on the local environment.

After several years of campaigning and legal battles, the proposal was eventually abandoned, with the company behind the proposal citing financial reasons for its withdrawal.

History of in Central Coast

The Central Coast region of Tasmania has a rich and fascinating history, from its Aboriginal origins to its role in Australia's defence during World War II. Its natural beauty and cultural heritage continue to attract visitors to the area today, and it remains an important part of Tasmania's identity.
